This simple and delicious breakfast has everything you need all toasted up onto a single slice of bread.
If you’re looking for breakfast ideas that are a step above your usual boring bowl of cereal, you’ve got to try this yummy toast topped with an egg and lots of crispy shredded cheese lining the rim.
Any bread can be used for this, but I use whole grain seeded bread for added nutrition. All in all, this breakfast is pretty darn healthy with lots of protein and fiber. You could also serve with avocado on top!
1. Smash With A Spoon
Use a spoon to smash a pocket into the center of your bread slice that’s just large enough for your egg to rest without spilling over the side.
2. Butter The Rim
Generously butter the edges of the bread to prevent them from burning in the toaster oven. It also tastes delicious! Butter is never a bad thing.
3. Crack An Egg
Crack an egg right into the center where you’ve created your shallow pocket.
4. Rim With Cheese
Season the egg to your liking with salt, pepper, garlic powder and anything else you’d like, and then rim the buttered edges of the toast with shredded cheese.
5. Toast (2 Ways)
TOASTER OVEN
Place on a foil lined pan and cook on the “bake setting” at 350 degrees until the egg white is cooked through (this should take about 5-10 minutes). You can optionally switch to your “toaster” setting once the egg is cooked to further brown and crisp the cheese if needed.
REGULAR OVEN
Bake on a lined or greased sheet pan at 400 degrees for 10-15 minutes (10 minutes will give you a runny yolk and 15 will give you a firmer yolk). The oven method is great if you are cooking several at once.
Once finished, the edges are crispy with that amazing toasted cheese flavor!

Ingredients
- 1 slice of bread *see notes
- 1 tbsp softened butter
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup shredded cheese
- seasoning to taste
Instructions
- Use the bottom of a spoon to flatten the center of your bread slice, just enough to create a shallow pocket so that your egg doesn't slide off.
- Butter the rim, paying close attention to the edges; the butter helps prevent them from burning.
- Crack your egg directly into the center where your pocket was formed.
- Season to your liking with salt, pepper, garlic powder and anything else you'd like.
- Rim the buttered edges with your shredded cheese.

Tips & Tricks
- If you don't like your egg yolk runny, you can use a fork to smash and swirl it a bit once it's on the toast. You basically want the egg yolk to spread out a bit so that it cooks faster.
- The smaller pieces of shredded cheese tend to cook a lot faster, so keep that in mind if you don't like your cheese too toasty.
- Try serving this toast with avocado and hot sauce. The ultimate breakfast!
